“I couldn’t have done it without this place!”

Lori Hudson recently received a phone call. A cousin had died. He had no church home. As a third-semester student in the Logsdon Seminary Master of Divinity program at the South Texas School of Christian Studies, Lori seemed the logical choice. So she planned the service and preached the sermon.

“I couldn’t have done it without this place!”

Lori has not yet taken any preaching classes. She has not yet had the Principles and Practices classes that covers such ministry as funerals and weddings. She has, however, learned at least two valuable skills: research and biblical exegesis. She used the former to discover various minister’s handbooks that contain advice and outlines for funerals. The latter allowed her to find an appropriate passage of Scripture and unfold its meaning in light of her cousin’s life and death.

Lori had long sensed a call to ministry, specifically the vocation of speaking at women’s conferences. She had, in fact, already begun to live out her calling. She came to SCS because, “if I was going to teach the Bible, I wanted to know I was getting it right.” She heard about Logsdon when an SCS representative attended a meeting of her local Baptist Association to share what the school has to offer. Despite the demands of her ministry, her job as a nurse practitioner, owning a business and a considerable commute to the campus, Lori took on the challenge. When the phone rang with news of her cousin, she felt her decision was confirmed.
